1.
It scanned our notes pretty badly so I typed them up:
Hole in My Heart – Alphabeat
Editing
• They used an effect where the main singer was laying on the hospital bed and the rest of the band members were moving walking around the bed and doing various things. At the editing stage, they sped it up so that we just see him laying there, and everyone else is speeding around him. This looks really effective and give different messages like time as stopped for them, or they are distant from the world or no body is listening to them.
Camera Work
• Lots of different angles
Sound
• The music of their soundtrack
Mise-En-Scéne
• The setting was supposed to be a hospital, so there were props so that it came across properly. There was a hospital bed and operation equipment etc.
Kiss the Girl – Ashley Tisdale
We looked at this video for inspiration on different camera angles. At 2:45 there is a high angle shot which looks really good when the eyes are closed. So you can see the eye-lashes, which in a way evoke emotions and makes the artist look sad. There are quite a few of these shot angles through out the video.
Professor Green – Monster
Editing
• At one point professor green in riding on a little cart with a dwarf and it flicks very quickly between the images of what’s actually happening and then a still image of the dwarf in a baby’s cot. This looks really good because it flicks very quickly and it is in a point of the song where it matches the beats.
• Instead of having quick straight cuts for their transitions, they use a transition which almost whizzes to the right while sped up, moving onto the next shot which creates a blur.
• On the fast parts of the video there are very fast beats to match the music to visuals which is part of Goodwin’s theory.
• Another transition used was on one of the lyrics ‘monster’ it zooms right into his face and speeds up and then goes to the next shot. This is used because the word ‘monster’ used here is quite powerful and louder then in the rest of the song.
Camera Work
• There are variations of the camerawork to keep the video interesting. There are tracking shots, close ups,
Mise-En-Scéne
• The setting is unusual but fits with the storyline because it’s about a scary house which you can visit, like the girl in the video.
• There are different props which fit in with the story like mirrors and carts like a fun house or ghost house at a fair.
Sound
• The only sound which is not the actual song is at the beginning before the music has started.
Booty Call – The Midnight Beast
Editing
• An effect is used where the girls are on the phone and the boys shout at them through the phone and their movement is exaggerated and then sped up, so its almost like their shouting blew them away.
• Quite a lot of wind was used to make the girls hair flow to make them look more sexy.
• At: one of the boys jumps in the air and then the camera moves around him, but he stays still in the air
• When the boys are laying in the bed the put the sheets over their heads, and then the next shot is them lifting the covers away again, but they are now in a different location.
Camera Work
• There are lots of fast cuts on the beat of the music, which is one of Goodwin’s principles.
Mise-En-Scéne
Sound
Barbie Girl - Aqua
Editing
• They use a split screen while Barbie and the boy are on the phone, and the lien between the 2 screens is made out of a telephone wire.
Camera Work
• There are some interesting angles where the girl is to the right of the camera, but very close – while they are in the pool. And the boy is in the background so you can see both of them, but the girl in engaging with the audience.
Mise-En-Scéne
• They use different locations which typically represent what you imagine Barbie to be. She is in a hair salon, a batch, but the pool, with horses and with her little dog.
Sound
Diana Vickers
• Lots of close-up shots where she does cute things like crinkle her nose and smile.
• There are also close-ups of her eyes and just her lips while she sings.
• When she sings the lyric ‘Nooo’ which is quite powerful, a close up is used. It is done so it engages us and is like we are there with her.
• She also winks at the camera and sometimes does little dances while looking at the camera.
• Very girly make up – lip gloss, eye shadow, fake lashes.
• Fragmented body shots of her legs etc (one of Goodwin’s principles)
• She cuts a rose, which has a representation of her heartbreak and sadness.
• She looks into a mirror at herself and also looks into the mirror but looking at the camera. This is use of screens within screens.
• The video cuts to lots of different locations on the beats, which is Goodwin’s principle of matching music to visuals.
• The props are consistent through out the video with cute vintage suitcases, envelopes, benches, cushions, decorations hanging from trees and lots of flowers.
Number One Enemy – Daisy Dares You
• There is a shot where everything is out of focus, and then goes in and out of focus.
• Lots of different angles, such as from very high up and then close-up etc.
• She sings in front of a background with lots of ivy everywhere.
• Different locations are used such as house which she is too big for like alice in wonderland, stairs, a maze and gardens.
Loick Essien
• There is an effect where there are 2 shots of the artist, but they are both transparent and they fade in and out of focus.
• There is a shot where he is sitting on a chair and to the right of him a girl is flashing in and out.
• There are other shots of the same artist with 2 shots overlapping, but here he is in different outfits and locations.
• A good camera shot is where there is a wall and the boy is leaning against one side and the girl leaning against the other.
Take on me – A-ha
• There is a really effective editing technique used where he is banging against the walls and the edges of him are going blurry, because he is trying to go from a cartoon to a real person.
We both reached for the gun – Chicago
• In this video the girl is really doll like and being pulled around.
• To make her look doll like with her eyes really still and wide, head tilting to the side, her body all floppy and her legs all higgledy piggledy.
Telephone – Lady Gaga
• Near the beginning of the song where Lady Gaga is on the phone there are shots taken for different angles at the same time. There is also an effect which matches the music to the visuals where she goes back and forwards really quickly.
• To make the filming more interesting there are shots through the bars in the prison.
• Fragmented body shots are used.
• When she is wearing the yellow police tape it has still images of her in loads of different positions.
• At one point when Beyonce sees her ex-boyfriend there are no lyrics but you see words on the screen of what they are saying to each other, even though their mouths are not open.
