Star Image Motifs are similar to logos, or are a similar running theme for an artist. Many artists use these so that their target audience recognise this and they become more memorable because of this. It builds on the idea of a brand for artists and is often shown throughout their promotional material and products.
I plan to use Star Image Motifs with my artist Scarlett as because she is a new artist, I feel she needs things that make her recognisable. I think the font she uses for her name should always be the same; many artists do this-
'NDubz' use the same graffiti-style font, which indicates their grime/ hip-hop genre:
'Eminem' always has his name in capitals with one of the 'E''s back to front, which sug
gests he is strong and original thinking:
'Katy Perry' always uses the same bubblegum-style font:
I think there should be a brand colour for my artist, and I feel the colour red would be a good colour theme for my artist as her name is 'Scarlett' and people will be reminded of her name when they see the colour.
Many artists do this such as Katy Perry, whose brand colour seems to be pink, with her name, website, advertisements and videos containing an abundance of this colour.
e.g. 'California gurls' contains lots of pink, as done her albulm and website:
Lily Allen has also done this with her previous album, which has a fawn colour on the background of her website and on her album cover.
My artist will always wear hair pieces, bold make-up, and revealing but fitting clothing for the different scenes. Artists such as Lily Allen and Katy Perry also do this.
Star Image Motifs can often be there to represent or mean something; for example, Lily Allen's recent change in colour theme to a paler, less bright colour could represent her personality becoming more subdued and her change in music now she desires to be a mum.
Similarly, since dating and marrying Russel Brand, Katy Perry's songs have been less about being promiscuous or unsure about relationships, such as 'Hot n Cold' and 'I kissed a girl', to about being in love, 'Peacock' and 'Teenage Dream' demonstrate this.
Due to the change in songs, the promotion has to change and therefore so does the star image motif.
Here is a visual demonstration I made on wordle of how Katy's lyrics changed from-to-
It is not unusual for artists to change their star image motif, such as Blink 182....
but I feel it delivers more of a lasting impact if an artist sticks to their original motif.
